This was an early morning. Most of yesterday we've spent cleaning the cottage, and bringing belongings back to the car. After all this hard work we had to wake up at 7 in the morning. We brought the keys back to Mrs.Nakkalajärvi and drove to Kolari to meet Alex who was coming there by train.
On the way to Kolari we've met quite a lot of reindeers. Once it was quite a big herd
right in the middle of the road. They were just running and not going to leave.
We had to just drive slowly behind them. There were already a few cars behind us.
All of a sudden a huge bus overtook us. Practically without reducing
its speed it started honking and scared the herd away from the road.
The most surprising thing happend after bus overtook us and reindeers
alike. The herd returned to the road, so that we could not pass again.
We had to apply the same technique as the bus driver - honk and drive
very close
to the reindeers.
Despite of this small delay we arrived to Kolari on time - 10 minutes before the train.
Kolari railway station is quite a place. Trains come here from Helsinki once in two days.
There's a small cafeteria and an even smaller waiting lounge.
We met Alex, put all bags into the boot of our car and started driving to Inari.
We were supposed to make it there by 2 o'clock to take a ferry to an
old Saami sacrificial island. One thing we didn't take into account was
the road. After 30 kilometers of a more or less there was a sign
"Päälyste päätty" - "Asphalt road ends" and asphalt road became a
gravle road for over 100 kilometers.
Of course we didn't make it by 2 o'clock to Inari. But despite of that we spent quite a good time there. Inarijärvi is a huge and very cold lake. I believe it is the fifth largest lake in Europe.
